Raises JPY 600M Led By Makers Fund

Company Aims to Grow Its Virtual Talent Program upd8 Along With Top Virtual Talent Kizuna AI

TOKYO – August 29, 2018 – Activ8, inc (Activ8), a Tokyo based start-up, announced its latest round of equity financing led by Makers Fund. A total of JPY 600 million was raised and subscribed by Makers Fund and gumi inc.

Founded in September 2016, Activ8 is one of the first companies to create an ecosystem specializing in virtual talents under the vision “Creating more worlds to live.” The human-controlled digital avatars have gained popularity especially in the last year, appearing not only on YouTube, but also performing at live events in front of fans and appearing in TV shows. Through its core virtual talent platform project upd8, the company has supported many top talents including Kizuna AI, the most popular with over 2.1 million followers on YouTube.

Funds from this round will enable Activ8 to grow the upd8 and support the company’s rapid growth and international expansion. It will further strengthen its support for virtual talent or VTuber activities (virtual YouTuber) by creating opportunities through both traditional and unique avenues, broadening their reach and audience base. The company is also looking to boost the number of its participating members and accelerate the growth of the virtual talent market. While this may seem to be mostly a Japanese phenomenon, Activ8 believes this new format of entertainment can potentially change the way people consume content in the future on a global scale.

Operated by Activ8, upd8 has supported numerous virtual talents including Kizuna AI through video content production, network TV appearances, online/offline/virtual space events and strategic partnerships with advertisers for promotional campaigns.
Moving forward, Activ8 aims to grow the upd8’s talent base with new members from different backgrounds and expetise, offering diverse content and formats (e.g. male talent, educational contents, musicians and artists). Additionally, upd8 plans to build infrastructure support for talents to reach their global audience, providing solutions such as a system to record entirely in virtual reality (VR).
